Portraits without borders

December 10th 2021 – February 04th 2022

What makes a photograph a portrait? Today, portrait photography is everywhere and has become a more and more powerful tool in defining individual and collective identities. Portraiture has been constantly reinvented by photographers since the mid-19th century. It has expanded without limits, into a wide spectrum of practices. Defining what a photographic portrait is seems increasingly complex.

In a public call for entries, FOTOGALERIE Friedrichshain invited artists to submit their work for a group exhibition that explores the boundaries of contemporary portrait photography. Overwhelmed by over 260 submissions from all over the world, 22 photographers from four continents have been finally selected, many of whose works will now be on view in Berlin for the first time.

The supporting program includes numerous activities on Instagram and an artist talk in the photo gallery in January.
