Benita Suchodrev

Of Lions and Lambs

May 17 – June 28 2024

opening: Thursday, May 16, 7pm

In her solo exhibition, Berlin-based Russian-American photographer Benita Suchodrev combines two works about the same place: the British seaside resort of Blackpool, characterized by mass tourism in the summer months and at the same time one of the poorest towns in England.

In 48 Hours Blackpool (2018), the photographer plunges her camera into the lively world of entertainment at the seaside resort for the first time over a strictly limited period of time. https://benitasuchodrev.com/portfolio/48-hours-blackpool/

Of Lions and Lambs (2019) is being presented for the first time in a comprehensive exhibition and shows the harsh reality away from the tourist season. Social injustice and precarious livelihoods characterize the cityscape in a grey winter month. https://benitasuchodrev.com/portfolio/of-lions-and-lambs/

The black and white photographs are always intense, authentic, raw and mysterious. The street becomes a stage with an abundance of bizarre characters, and at the same time the images reveal the artists’ deeply human approach to photography.
